Sunny went the distance and has nothing to be ashamed of

No gold, but plenty of smiles.

I visited Linda over the weekend and saw some more plants growing through the cracks.

The rendering pot of succulents and annuals, from Linda’s second floor porch.  God bless the hens and chicks that escaped.

God bless the grass that grows thru the crack.
They roll the concrete over it to try and keep it back.
The concrete gets tired of what it has to do,
It breaks and it buckles and the grass grows thru,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the truth that fights toward the sun,
They roll the lies over it and think that it is done.
It moves through the ground and reaches for the air,
And after a while it is growing everywhere,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the grass that grows through cement.
It's green and it's tender and it's easily bent.
But after a while it lifts up its head,
For the grass is living and the stone is dead,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the grass that's gentle and low,
Its roots they are deep and its will is to grow.
And God bless the truth, the friend of the poor,
And the wild grass growing at the poor man's door,
And God bless the grass.

  2. We think we are so smart. We cover the ground with an impenetrable substance but all it takes is the tiniest crack and a tender shoot and nature reasserts herself.

  3. Sunny and her caretakers have been such an inspiration this summer. The poem is also very inspirational. A small seed has such potential.

  5. I love the sentiments expressed in the poem. What a dreary, barren world this would be if it weren't for all the "weeds" just doing their own thing. Hooray for the Hen & Chicks that continue to thrive outside the pot! They are a delightfully hardy plant which is one of the things I love about them.

  6. Well done Sunny - of course she couldn't have done it without her nutritionist, coach and carers.

I love that beautifully appropriate poem.

  14. My rendering pot belonged to my Great Grandfather in Pennsylvania...The succulent hanging over the sides is what my Grandmother called, "creeping charlie"..The hens and chicks are covering the brain coral from my husband's bachelor uncle who walked the Florida beach most of his later life...Wonderful memories in that pot..(Mayflower didn't like the prospects of moving it in 2002) but it holds wonderful memories and thank you Joanne for your camera on this visit..Poem is most fitting..

  15. Nature is a tough old woman, it will take much more than a bit of bitumen and concrete to defeat her.
Bye, Sunny, you had a good life.
